What's a Wiki? A wiki is an online resource that allows users to add and edit content collectively. Anyone can add information to a web page or edit the information added by others. The first wiki site was created by Ward Cunningham in 1995 for the Portland Pattern Repository, a software programming website. Cunningham came up with the term wiki based on the "wiki wiki" shuttle buses at the Honolulu Airport. Wiki wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian, and the wiki concept allowed the Portland Pattern Repository to grow quickly. The site now hosts tens of thousands of web pages. Many other websites have copied the wiki concept. Wikipedia is a publicly edited encyclopedia with more than one million articles in English alone. Because of the collaborative nature of a wiki, the term is sometimes said to be an acronym for "what I know is." Geek note: Because that acronym was created from the word, some people call it a "backronym." The YardAndPlant wiki strives to become a collaborative encyclopedia for backyard gardening. Share what you know about plants, pests, and how to make knock-out landscaping. Together we'll make a great web resource! Happy gardening and happy wiki-ing! |
